Advanced Machinist



Set up, test, and adjust manufacturing and production equipment to aid engineers in their everyday tasks. Advanced Machining graduates also monitor and adjust equipment daily as needed.

Career Details


Students in Advanced Machinist are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Understand the basic processes used to form, bend, measure, and test metals
  • Properly handle materials and liquids, following the basic skills required for personal safety
  • Proficient in setting up and operating machines to saw, cut, bend, or straighten metal or plastic material
  • Proficient in reading work orders or production schedules to determine specifications, materials to use, where to cut, and other dimensions
  • Check manufactured pieces for defects and flaws and confirm that they meet specifications
  • Proficient in maintaining machines and in preventing and recognizing non-characteristic machine sounds

Program graduates go on to ply their trade in a number of settings including manufacturing companies, plants, and small machine shops.


Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete Job Corps' basic Machining career technical training program.
  • Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a positive attendance and progress record.
  • Complete a successful phone, in-person, or videoconference interview.
